Jaisalmer · Rajasthan · India
Quarried from the ancient Jaisalmer Formation of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer yellow sandstone is one of India's most prized building stones. From deep amber-gold to pale cream, each colour grade offers distinct aesthetic character and performance properties for architecture, cladding, and decorative stonework.
Jaisalmer yellow sandstone belongs to the Jaisalmer Formation, a sedimentary sequence deposited during the Middle Jurassic period approximately 160 million years ago. The formation sits beneath the golden dunes of western Rajasthan and is composed primarily of fine-to-medium quartz grains cemented with calcium carbonate and iron oxides.
It is the concentration of iron oxide (limonite and goethite) that produces the stone's characteristic golden hues. Variations in mineral distribution across different quarry depths and locations result in the range of colour grades available today — from pale cream to deep amber-gold.
The stone is relatively compact, with a medium hardness of 4–5 on the Mohs scale, making it workable enough for fine hand-carving and CNC machining while still being durable enough for exterior architectural applications. This balance of workability and durability has made Jaisalmer stone the preferred material for Rajasthani fort construction for over 500 years.
Our quarry operations in the Kishangarh RIICO Industrial Area, Jaisalmer access multiple seams within the formation, allowing us to supply consistent, grade-specific stone at commercial volume. Each block is extracted using diamond-wire cutting to minimise micro-fractures, then transported to our processing facility for slabbing, sizing, and finishing.
Unlike many commercial stone suppliers who mix grades and pass them as a single variety, Shraddha Saburi Stone grades every consignment individually. Colour swatches and physical samples are dispatched to clients before bulk orders are confirmed, ensuring the installed result matches expectations precisely.
The stone's natural layered bedding planes mean it cleaves cleanly into slabs, flags, and tiles with consistent thickness. This characteristic also gives the stone its subtle linear texture — visible in raked finishes and hand-tooled surfaces — that distinguishes Jaisalmer stone from homogeneous engineered materials.
The Jaisalmer quarry zone produces sandstone across a warm golden spectrum. Below are the four principal grades we supply, each with its own visual character and recommended applications.
Golden Yellow is the signature grade — deep amber with warm bronze veining, most associated with Jaisalmer's historic forts and havelis. It is the densest of the four grades and performs best in high-traffic areas such as flooring, entrance plazas, and structural facades.
Cream Yellow carries soft ivory tones with faint golden undertones. It is the preferred choice for temple interiors, heritage restoration projects, and residential courtyards where a lighter, serene aesthetic is desired. Its fine grain makes it particularly suited to intricate carving work.
Sunset Gold is the most visually dramatic grade, featuring rich orange-amber hues that intensify in afternoon light. Architects and landscape designers specify this grade for statement elements — garden walls, water features, hotel lobbies — where the stone becomes a design focal point rather than a background material.
Buff Yellow is the palest variety, a neutral warm tone that reads almost white in bright light. It integrates seamlessly with contemporary minimalist architecture and is often selected for modern commercial buildings where the warmth of natural stone is desired without a dominant colour statement.
Jaisalmer yellow sandstone's combination of warm colour, workability, and durability makes it one of the most versatile natural stones available from the Indian subcontinent. Below are the principal application categories for which it is specified by architects and procurement professionals globally.
What are the different color grades of Jaisalmer yellow sandstone?
Jaisalmer yellow sandstone comes in four primary colour grades: Golden Yellow (deep, warm amber-gold), Cream Yellow (soft ivory with golden undertones), Sunset Gold (rich orange-amber hues), and Buff Yellow (pale neutral tone ideal for minimalist projects). Each grade is quarried from distinct layers of the Jaisalmer Formation and has a unique mineral composition. Our team visually inspects and grades every block before processing to ensure colour consistency within your order.
Which grade of Jaisalmer yellow sandstone is best for exterior cladding?
For exterior cladding, Golden Yellow and Buff Yellow are the most recommended grades. Golden Yellow offers high density (2.2–2.35 g/cm³) and low water absorption (below 4%), making it highly weather-resistant for facades, boundary walls, and hotel exteriors. Buff Yellow provides a cleaner, contemporary aesthetic favoured in modern architecture. All grades are suitable for exterior use; the choice depends primarily on the desired visual tone and climate of the installation site.
Does Jaisalmer yellow sandstone fade over time?
Jaisalmer yellow sandstone is exceptionally UV-stable due to its iron oxide mineral composition, which gives it its golden colour. Unlike painted or dyed stones, the colour is inherent to the mineral structure and does not peel or chip. Over decades, natural sandstone typically mellows slightly — Golden Yellow may deepen in richness with weathering. Applying a penetrating stone sealer every 5–7 years maintains original colour and reduces surface moisture ingress in coastal or high-humidity climates.
