Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Jaisalmer sandstone, our products, and how to order.

What is Jaisalmer sandstone?
Jaisalmer sandstone is a premium natural stone quarried from the Thar Desert region of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India. It is characterized by its distinctive warm golden-yellow color, fine grain texture, excellent durability, and natural thermal insulation properties. It has been used for centuries in the construction of forts, palaces, temples, and heritage buildings across Rajasthan — including the iconic Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What colors does Jaisalmer sandstone come in?
Jaisalmer sandstone comes in warm golden-yellow tones ranging from pale honey to rich deep amber. The color varies slightly depending on the specific quarry and stone layer. The distinctive color is caused by the presence of iron oxide minerals, giving it a warm, radiant appearance — especially beautiful in sunlight. It is also called "golden stone" or "desert gold."
Is Jaisalmer sandstone suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, Jaisalmer sandstone is excellent for outdoor use. It has proven exceptional durability over centuries of use in harsh desert conditions. It handles extreme heat, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations well. It is used for exterior cladding, flooring, paving, garden features, pool surrounds, and architectural elements outdoors. A penetrating sealer is recommended for high-exposure outdoor installations.
How does Jaisalmer stone compare to marble or granite?
Jaisalmer sandstone offers a warmer, more rustic aesthetic than marble or granite. It is softer and easier to carve — ideal for intricate jali and sculptural work — whereas granite is very hard. It provides better thermal insulation than both. It is more affordable than marble and granite for equivalent projects. While marble and granite offer higher density and a high-gloss polish, Jaisalmer sandstone excels in carving, heritage applications, and warm aesthetic appeal.
What is the compressive strength and density of Jaisalmer sandstone?
Jaisalmer sandstone has a compressive strength of 60–100 MPa and a density of 2,200–2,500 kg/m³. Water absorption is typically less than 3% by weight. These properties make it suitable for both structural and decorative applications. It is lighter than granite (~2,700 kg/m³) while still providing excellent structural integrity.
Does Jaisalmer stone fade in sunlight?
No, Jaisalmer sandstone is highly UV-stable and does not fade in sunlight. The golden color is inherent in the mineral composition of the stone. The stone used in Jaisalmer Fort has retained its distinctive golden color for over 800 years. Many people find that the stone develops a beautiful natural patina over time with weathering.
What makes Jaisalmer sandstone unique?
Jaisalmer sandstone is unique for its distinctive warm golden-yellow color from natural iron oxide, its centuries-long use in iconic structures like Jaisalmer Fort (UNESCO World Heritage), its exceptional workability allowing intricate carving and jali work, its thermal properties keeping buildings cool in hot climates, its proven durability over hundreds of years, and its deep cultural significance in Rajasthani and Indian architecture. No other stone combines these qualities.
Is Jaisalmer stone fire-resistant and eco-friendly?
Yes on both counts. Jaisalmer sandstone is naturally fire-resistant — it does not ignite or combust. It is also eco-friendly: it is a natural material requiring minimal processing, has excellent thermal mass properties that reduce building energy consumption, and is exceptionally durable — lasting centuries without replacement. We follow all environmental regulations in our quarrying and manufacturing.
Is Jaisalmer sandstone used in modern architecture?
Absolutely. Jaisalmer sandstone is increasingly popular in contemporary architecture. It is used in modern residential facades, luxury hotel lobbies, commercial building cladding, contemporary interior design, and fusion architecture that blends traditional Indian elements with modern design. Its warm golden color pairs beautifully with concrete, glass, and steel — making it a favorite among top architects worldwide.
What products does Shraddha Saburi Stone manufacture?
We manufacture a comprehensive range of Jaisalmer sandstone products: temple construction stone and architectural elements, stone jali (lattice screens) in traditional and modern designs, decorative pillars and columns, interior and exterior stone cladding, flooring tiles and pavers, custom carved stone panels and sculptures, heritage architecture elements, and CNC-machined stone components in any design.
Can you make custom stone carvings?
Yes, custom stone carvings are one of our specializations. Our master craftsmen create bespoke pieces including figurines, decorative panels, architectural reliefs, temple deities, geometric patterns, floral designs, and any custom artwork. We can work from photographs, drawings, sketches, or CAD files. Lead time for custom pieces is 2–8 weeks depending on complexity and quantity.
What stone jali designs are available?
We offer a wide range of stone jali designs: traditional Rajasthani geometric patterns (chakra, hexagon, octagon), floral and vine designs, Islamic-inspired geometric screens, modern minimalist patterns, and fully custom designs. Stone jali is used as room dividers, windows, balustrades, façades, and decorative panels. Both standard and custom sizes are available.
Can you supply stone for temple construction?
Yes, temple construction is a primary specialization. Jaisalmer sandstone has been the stone of choice for Hindu temples for centuries. We supply temple walls, pillars, mandaps, shikhars, jali screens, step platforms, deity figures, and decorative carvings. We work with temple trusts, architects, and religious organizations across India and internationally.
What is stone cladding and what thickness is needed?
Stone cladding refers to thin stone panels used to cover walls (interior or exterior). Jaisalmer sandstone cladding is popular for its warm golden color and texture. For interior walls, 12–20mm panels work well with adhesive. For exterior walls, 25–50mm is recommended for durability. Cladding can be applied to building façades, feature walls, fireplaces, columns, and entrance areas.
What finish options are available?
We offer the following surface finishes: Natural (rough quarry character), Sawn (smooth machine-cut), Honed (smooth matte), Bush-hammered (textured, anti-slip), Shot-blasted (uniform textured), and Hand-chiseled (rustic artisanal). Honed is popular for interiors; natural or bush-hammered suits outdoor and heritage applications. Custom finishes are available on request.
What sizes are available in Jaisalmer stone slabs?
Standard slab sizes range from 30×30 cm to 120×60 cm. Custom sizes up to 200×100 cm can be cut on order. Thickness ranges from 12mm (thin cladding panels) to 300mm+ (structural blocks). Common thicknesses: 12mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 50mm. We cut to any size per your project requirements.
Do you use CNC machines?
Yes, our manufacturing facility is equipped with state-of-the-art CNC stone cutting and carving machines. CNC technology allows highly precise cuts, complex patterns, and intricate designs with perfect consistency — especially for jali screens, decorative panels, and repeat architectural elements. We can work from DXF/DWG CAD files for CNC production.
Can you replicate heritage architectural designs?
Yes, heritage restoration is an important part of our work. We can match the color, texture, and character of existing stone for seamless restoration of temples, havelis, stepwells, and colonial-era buildings. We can also produce aged or weathered finishes for authentic heritage reproduction. Our team has experience working with heritage architects and conservation specialists.
Can Jaisalmer stone be used for flooring and pool areas?
Yes. Jaisalmer sandstone is durable, naturally anti-slip (in natural or bush-hammered finish), and beautiful for flooring. For high-traffic areas, 20mm+ thickness and bush-hammered finish are recommended. For pool surrounds, the textured finish provides excellent slip resistance when wet — seal the stone and use pH-neutral pool chemicals. Minimum 30mm thickness is recommended for pool surrounds.
Do you export Jaisalmer stone internationally?
Yes, we regularly export premium Jaisalmer sandstone worldwide. We supply to UAE, USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and other countries. We handle all export documentation including commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate (where required), and can arrange freight forwarding through our partner logistics providers.
Do you ship to UAE, USA, and UK?
Yes to all three. UAE: We ship regularly to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah — transit ~8–14 days from Mundra port. USA: We ship to Los Angeles, New York, Houston — transit ~20–30 days. UK: We ship to Felixstowe and Southampton — transit ~20–25 days. We provide FOB, CIF, or DAP pricing and handle complete export documentation for each destination.
Which ports do you use for export?
We primarily export through Mundra Port (Gujarat) and Nhava Sheva — JNPT (Mumbai). For Gulf destinations, Mundra is preferred for its proximity. For the USA, UK, and Europe, Nhava Sheva is typically used. We work with experienced freight forwarders who handle customs clearance, documentation, and multimodal transport.
How is Jaisalmer stone packaged for export?
For export, stone is carefully packaged to prevent transit damage. Slabs and tiles are palletized and wrapped in foam padding and plastic. Carved elements and jali screens are individually wrapped in foam, packed in wooden crates, and cushioned with packing material. All packages are labeled with product details, origin, and destination. Container loading is supervised to ensure secure placement and weight distribution.
What are the payment terms for export orders?
Standard export payment terms are 30% advance against proforma invoice and 70% against copy of shipping documents (BL copy). We also accept Letters of Credit (LC) from established buyers. Pricing can be quoted FOB Mundra, CIF destination port, or DAP buyer's premises. We accept payment in INR, USD, AED, and GBP.
What is the minimum order quantity?
MOQ varies by product: standard sandstone slabs and tiles — 50 square meters minimum; custom jali and carvings — negotiable based on project scope; export orders — typically one 20-foot container (approximately 20–25 cubic meters). Smaller quantities may be available for sample or testing orders. Contact us to discuss your specific project requirements.
What is the price of Jaisalmer sandstone?
Pricing varies based on grade, finish, size, and quantity. Standard slabs typically start from ₹35–60 per square foot for basic grades up to ₹100–250 per square foot for premium grades with special finishes. Custom carved elements are priced per piece based on complexity. Export pricing in USD depends on the product and freight costs. Contact us for an accurate quote for your specific requirements.
Do you provide stone samples?
Yes, we provide stone samples for genuine project inquiries. Sample pieces (~15×10 cm) are available in standard finishes (natural, honed, bush-hammered). Samples can be sent via courier. Please contact us at +91 7023912171 or WhatsApp +91 9649299121 to request samples, specifying your location and project type.
What is the lead time for orders?
Lead times depend on product type and quantity: Standard slabs and tiles — 7–15 days; Jali designs (standard patterns) — 15–30 days; Custom carvings and decorative elements — 30–90 days based on complexity; Large export container orders — additional time needed for production, quality check, and packaging. Rush orders can sometimes be accommodated at a premium rate.
Can you work from architectural drawings or CAD files?
Yes, we work with architectural drawings, AutoCAD files (DXF/DWG), 3D models, and detailed specifications. Our technical team reviews drawings and provides a detailed quotation. For CNC-machined pieces, DXF or DWG files are preferred. For hand-carved elements, detailed photographs and measurements are sufficient. We collaborate closely with architects throughout the project.
Do you offer bulk discounts?
Yes, we offer competitive pricing on bulk orders. Container-load orders (20ft or 40ft) receive the best factory-direct pricing. Pricing is negotiated based on quantity, product type, specifications, and delivery location. We maintain long-term supply relationships with architects, contractors, and importers who receive preferential pricing. Contact our sales team for a detailed quote.

How do I clean Jaisalmer sandstone?
Clean Jaisalmer sandstone with a soft brush and mild soapy water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners, bleach, and harsh chemicals — these damage the stone surface. For deep cleaning, use a dedicated natural stone cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. For stubborn stains, consult a stone care specialist rather than applying chemical cleaners.
Does Jaisalmer stone require sealing?
We recommend sealing Jaisalmer sandstone, especially for flooring, outdoor applications, and wet areas. Use a penetrating (impregnating) sealer — not a surface sealer — to allow the stone to breathe while reducing water absorption and staining. Reseal every 2–3 years for high-traffic flooring, every 4–5 years for wall cladding. Sealing does not significantly alter the color or texture.
Can Jaisalmer stone be repaired if it cracks or chips?
Minor chips and cracks in Jaisalmer sandstone can be repaired using a stone epoxy or filler matched to the stone color. For larger damage, individual tiles or sections can be replaced — which is why we recommend keeping spare material from your original order. We can supply matching stone for repairs and renovations. Contact us with details and photos for repair advice.
Can Jaisalmer stone be polished?
Jaisalmer sandstone can be finished to a smooth honed (matte) surface, though it will not achieve the high gloss of marble or granite due to its sedimentary, granular nature. Most clients prefer the honed or natural finish — it retains the warm, earthy character of the stone and is actually more popular than high gloss for Jaisalmer stone in contemporary projects.
