Why Choose Sandstone Over Marble, Granite & Ceramic

Marble and granite are excellent materials, but they bring specific constraints — high cost, cold underfoot, and a clinical aesthetic that many homeowners and architects now wish to move away from. Ceramic tiles are economical but lack the warmth, depth, and longevity that natural stone delivers.

Jaisalmer sandstone flooring offers a compelling middle ground: the authenticity of natural stone, the warmth of an earthen material that moderates temperature, and a price point that is substantially lower than imported marble.

Thermal Comfort — Sandstone is a poor conductor of heat, staying cool in summers and not uncomfortably cold in winters, making it ideal for Indian climates and barefoot living.
Natural Anti-Slip Texture — Unlike polished marble and glazed ceramic, the natural and bush-hammered surfaces of sandstone provide grip underfoot without additional anti-slip treatment.
Heritage Aesthetic — The warm golden tones of Jaisalmer sandstone complement traditional Indian architecture as well as contemporary minimalist interiors, reducing the need for colour coordination.
Competitive Price Point — Factory-direct pricing from our Jaisalmer quarry makes sandstone flooring significantly more affordable than Italian marble or imported granite of comparable visual quality.
Longevity — Sandstone structures in Rajasthan have stood for centuries. As flooring material, properly sealed sandstone tiles last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Surface Finishes

Choosing the Right Finish for Each Area

The surface finish significantly affects slip resistance, maintenance requirements, and the overall aesthetic. Different applications call for different finishes.

Honed
Best for Interiors
Machine-smoothed to a matte finish with a slight sheen. Uniform appearance, easy to clean, and elegant for living rooms, hotel lobbies, and covered verandas. Not recommended for wet or unshaded outdoor areas without sealing.
Natural / Sawn
Best for Heritage & Rustic
Quarry-sawn surface with natural texture retained. Irregular grain pattern adds character. Ideal for temple floors, heritage renovations, courtyard paving, and anywhere an authentic hand-worked look is desired.
Bush-Hammered
Best for Outdoors & Pools
Mechanically textured surface with a consistent pitted finish. Maximum slip resistance in all weather conditions. The preferred choice for swimming pool surrounds, external pathways, garden paving, and rooftop terraces.

Where Sandstone Flooring Excels

Living Rooms & Bedrooms — Honed sandstone tiles create a warm, inviting floor surface. The golden tones complement neutral palettes and traditional Indian interiors.
Hotel Lobbies & Resorts — Large-format sandstone slabs with a honed or natural finish create the luxurious, grounded aesthetic sought by boutique hotels and heritage resort properties.
Temple & Religious Spaces — Jaisalmer sandstone has a centuries-long association with temple construction. Natural-finish flooring honours this tradition while providing a durable surface for heavy foot traffic.
Courtyards & Open Verandas — Natural and bush-hammered tiles withstand sun, rain, and heavy use in outdoor Indian conditions without fading or cracking.
Swimming Pool Surrounds — Bush-hammered sandstone provides natural anti-slip performance at pool edges, while the warm colour integrates with garden landscaping.
Commercial & Office Spaces — Large-format sandstone flooring is increasingly used in upscale office receptions and commercial lobbies seeking a departure from standard marble or granite finishes.

Installation Tips & Best Practices

Correct installation ensures maximum longevity and prevents common issues like cracking, staining, or uneven settling.

Adhesive Type — Use a flexible, polymer-modified cement-based tile adhesive (C2 grade or higher per IS standards) to allow slight movement without causing tile cracks. Avoid rigid cement-only beds for tiles over 400×400 mm.
Expansion Joints — Allow 3–5 mm expansion joints every 3–4 metres and at all wall-floor junctions. Fill with flexible silicone sealant in a matching colour. Critical for outdoor installations subject to thermal cycling.
Pre-Sealing — Apply a penetrating impregnating sealer to all tiles before grouting. This prevents grout from staining the stone surface. A second coat after grouting provides full protection.
Grouting — Use a sanded grout in a complementary tone (cream or buff). Avoid dark grout on light sandstone as grout haze can be difficult to remove. Apply grout only after adhesive has fully cured (minimum 24 hours).
Ongoing Sealing — Re-apply penetrating sealer every 1–2 years for indoor areas and annually for outdoor or wet areas to maintain stain resistance and reduce water absorption.

Frequently Asked

Sandstone Flooring Questions

What thickness of sandstone is recommended for flooring?

For standard indoor flooring, a thickness of 20–25 mm is recommended. For outdoor areas, heavy traffic zones, and driveways, 30–40 mm provides better load-bearing capacity. Pool surrounds and verandas typically use 25–30 mm. We can supply any thickness to match your structural requirements.

Is Jaisalmer sandstone flooring slippery when wet?

Natural and bush-hammered finishes have an inherently textured surface that provides good slip resistance even when wet, making them ideal for outdoor areas, pool decks, and monsoon-prone courtyards. Honed (smooth) finishes have less texture and are better suited for covered indoor areas. A penetrating sealer can further improve grip and reduce water absorption for any finish.

Can Jaisalmer sandstone be used in bathrooms?

Yes, with proper sealing. Jaisalmer sandstone has a water absorption rate of approximately 3–5%, which is higher than granite. For bathrooms, we recommend applying a quality penetrating stone sealer before installation and re-sealing annually. Use epoxy-based or flexible waterproof adhesive during installation and ensure no standing water is left on unsealed stone for extended periods.

How do you maintain Jaisalmer sandstone floors?

Sandstone floors are low-maintenance. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit. Mop with a pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in water — avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar or lemon-based products, which can etch the surface. Apply a penetrating sealer every 1–2 years to protect against stains. Avoid harsh abrasive scrubbing pads. Outdoor sandstone floors may be jet-washed periodically.
