Rajasthani Garden Pavilions · Jaisalmer
The chhatri is Rajasthan's defining architectural gesture — a domed pavilion that turns a garden corner into a destination, a rooftop into a sky-throne, a resort lawn into a heritage landscape. We manufacture traditional Rajasthani chhatri and contemporary stone gazebo structures in Jaisalmer sandstone, fully assembled and export-ready worldwide.
The chhatri (Sanskrit: छत्री, meaning umbrella or canopy) originated in medieval Rajasthani architecture as a memorial cenotaph — a small domed pavilion erected over the cremation site of a ruler or noble. Over centuries, the form migrated from funerary architecture into living buildings: rooftop chhatri turrets crown the corner towers of Rajasthani forts, chhatri pavilions punctuate the terraced gardens of Mughal monuments, and chhatri-form kiosks define the skyline of Jaisalmer's golden fort.
What distinguishes the chhatri from other pavilion traditions is its strict architectural proportioning — the ratio of pillar height to dome span, the projection of the cornice bracket, the curvature of the dome — governed by classical silpashastra texts. Our craftsmen follow these proportioning rules, which is why our chhatri structures have an authenticity of visual character that contemporary reproductions often lack.
A chhatri in Jaisalmer sandstone does not merely look traditional. It is traditional — made from the same golden stone, by craftsmen from the same region, using carving methods passed down through the same families who built the havelis and cenotaphs that inspired its contemporary use in resort and garden design.
Today, stone chhatri and gazebo structures are among the most sought-after landscape architecture elements for heritage resorts, private estates, botanical gardens, and public parks. They provide a defined outdoor room — shelter from sun without enclosure, grandeur without heaviness, an anchor point for garden composition.
International demand for Jaisalmer stone pavilions has grown steadily as landscape architects in the UAE, UK, USA, and Australia seek authentic Indian architectural elements for high-end residential and hospitality projects. Unlike cast stone or fibre-reinforced polymer replicas, natural sandstone chhatri structures improve with age — developing a silver-grey weathering patina on exposed surfaces while retaining their warm golden core colour.
We manufacture both traditional chhatri (with domed roofs, carved pillars, decorated cornice brackets, and ornamental finials) and contemporary stone gazebo structures (with flat or gently pitched stone roofs, simpler pillar profiles, and minimal surface decoration) for clients who prefer a quieter aesthetic language while retaining the permanence and materiality of natural stone.
Our chhatri and gazebo structures are produced in three standard pillar-count configurations, each available in a range of platform sizes. All dimensions are fully customisable.
Dome styles: Flat dome (shallow curvature with minimal projection — suits contemporary applications and rooftop installations where structural depth is a constraint), Conical dome (the classic Rajasthani chhatri profile — a pointed ribbed apex rising from a flaring eave), and Ribbed dome (a full hemisphere divided by raised ribs from apex to springing line — associated with Mughal-influenced palace architecture).
All chhatri and gazebo structures are manufactured as numbered modular assemblies with precision-cut stone-to-stone joints using traditional lime mortar or modern stone adhesive depending on client preference. Assembly drawings and installation manuals are provided with every order. We have successfully exported assembled structures to the UK, UAE, USA, and Australia.
A stone chhatri or gazebo is among the most high-impact investments a garden or landscape designer can make. Its visual authority — the combination of mass, height, and architectural detail — anchors a landscape composition in a way that no planted element or lightweight structure can achieve. Below are the principal contexts in which our pavilions are installed.
What is a chhatri and how is it different from a gazebo?
A chhatri is a traditional Rajasthani domed kiosk pavilion — the name derives from the Sanskrit word for umbrella. It is defined by a domed or umbrella-shaped roof supported on a colonnade of slender carved pillars, following classical silpashastra proportioning rules. A gazebo is a Western garden pavilion tradition — typically a roofed, open-sided structure for garden seating — without the specific proportioning or symbolic meaning of the chhatri. In modern use, both terms describe similar garden pavilion forms. We manufacture both traditional chhatri (following Rajasthani architectural proportions) and contemporary garden gazebo styles adapted for modern landscapes.
What sizes of stone gazebo/chhatri do you offer?
Our standard configurations span three sizes: Small chhatri (4 pillars) — 6ft × 6ft to 8ft × 8ft platform, for garden focal points and pool corners. Medium gazebo (6 pillars) — 10ft × 10ft to 12ft × 12ft, for outdoor seating and dining pavilions. Large ceremonial chhatri (8 pillars) — 14ft × 14ft to 20ft × 20ft, for wedding mandaps, resort entrance features, and public gardens. All sizes are fully customisable. Height from ground to dome apex varies by configuration and dome style chosen.
Can a stone chhatri be disassembled and transported?
Yes. All our stone gazebo and chhatri structures are manufactured as precision-fit modular assemblies designed for disassembly and reassembly. Each piece is numbered and accompanied by an assembly diagram. Components — base plinth slabs, pillar sections, architrave beams, dome rings, and dome cap — are sized to fit standard shipping containers. We have exported chhatri assemblies to the UAE, UK, USA, and Australia. A standard 4-pillar chhatri can be erected on-site in 2–4 days by a stone setter following our assembly instructions.
